Nan McCarthy

Nan McCarthy can't remember a time when she didn't love to draw and paint. Her mother, who came from a family of artists, was her first art teacher. She minored in Studio Art at Wells College and was awarded a work-study scholarship at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, where she studied for a year after college. Over the years, she has studied with a number of different teachers.

Although Nan has worked in many mediums over the years, she now works almost exclusively in acrylics. She works from her own photographs, and favorite subjects include New England scenes and flowers that she grows in her garden. She also accepts commissions for classic car portraits. As a change of pace, she enjoys trompe l'oeil (French for "fool the eye") fine art.

Nan is a signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters (formerly National Acrylic Painters' Association) and is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, the Sharon Arts Center, and NH Made. She is represented by the Gallery at MainStreet BookEnds, Warner, NH; the Sharon Arts Juried Gallery, Peterborough, NH; The Gallery at Well Sweep, Hillsborough, NH; and the Central Square Emporium, Hillsborough NH. Her work is in private collections in Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and England.

Nan retired from her day job with the State of NH in October 2007 and is really enjoying having time to work on her art, creating paintings and notecards, as well as managing the business side. She participated in the Hillsborough Area Artisans' Studio Tour, where she introduced her giclees and notecards. Nan's painting "Nauset Light" recently won Honorable Mention at Sulphur Springs Valley 12th International Miniature and Small Works Art Show, Willcox, AZ. She is currently exhibiting in the American Society of Marine Artists 2008 New England Regional Exhibition, which will be at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, South Yarmouth, MA, through June 15, 2008, before traveling to the Herreshoff Maritime Museum and America's Cup Hall of Fame, Bristol, RI, and the Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, ME.
